Brussels conference, April 2018:
Entering its eighth year, the conflict in Syria has uprooted more than 11.6 million Syrians from their homes:
some 6.1 million have been internally displaced while 5.5 million have sought refuge in the five host countries of
Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, and Egypt.
The NLG initiative was launched in 2013 to focus attention on the plight of children and youth affected by the Syria
and Iraq crises. Building on the efforts made under the NLG initiative, Supporting Syria and the Region
Conference held in London in 2016 represented a significant shift in the international community’s response to
the Syria crisis. This included focusing on jobs and economic opportunities, the strategic role of education, and the
need to make long-term commitments to provide adequate and predictable funding for Syria and the region.
