Damascus, Syria – On September 14, the school year began in Syria. UNICEF is supporting a nationwide ‘Back to Learning’ campaign to provide school supplies for up to one million conflict-affected children. Each child will receive a school bag containing stationery supplies including notebooks, a pencil case, pens, pencils, colouring pencils, rulers, erasers and pencil sharpeners.
The Back to Learning campaign has been made possible through the generous support of the European Union, the US fund for UNICEF in partnership with theEducate a Child programme, the Governments of Canada and Japan, and IKEA.
An estimated one million children remaining out of school as a result of the on-going conflict across the country. One in five schools have been affected by the crisis and school attendance is less than half in areas such as Raqqa and Idleb.
