RIYADH, 31 December 2013 – UNICEF today announced that the AlWaleed Bin Talal Foundation has made a significant financial contribution to support the urgent humanitarian needs of children affected by the crisis in Syria.
Dr. Ibrahim El. Ziq, Gulf Area Representative, UNICEF commended the foundation and said: “We would like to extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to the AlWaleed Bin Talal Foundation for its ongoing commitment to crucial development and humanitarian relief efforts. As a dedicated philanthropist HRH Prince AlWaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz AlSaud has made a marked difference in the lives of people in the region and world. Now, as the situation continues to worsen in Syria, his generous contributions will help to save the lives of children and women displaced inside Syria as well as refugee populations across the region.
“During 2013 the AlWaleed Bin Talal Foundation supported our efforts to benefit more than 5 million children through immunisation programmes to prevent child mortality, more than 10 million people with access to clean drinking water and sanitation, 853,476 children who have been exposed to the horrors of war with provision of psychological support and 559,266 children through access to quality education in safe and protective learning environments.” Dr. El. Ziq added.
It is estimated that there are more than 4 million children in need of humanitarian assistance inside Syria, in addition to 1.1 million living outside the country as refugees.
UNICEF promotes the rights and wellbeing of every child, in everything we do. Together with our partners, we work in 190 countries and territories to translate that commitment into practical action, focusing special effort on reaching the most vulnerable and excluded children, to the benefit of all children, everywhere.
